Final Worship Service - October 11, 2009.
About a year ago the people at Christ the King decided to spend time really listening for what God was asking them to do next. After 50+ years of serving the loop and south loop neighborhoods, the members of this little congregation had come to a crossroads. They asked Kelly Fryer and Tana Kjos of A Renewal Enterprise to help them discern God's direction.
During this past year CTK has continued the tradition of being a place of radical welcome to all people in this neighborhood - a church with no walls! Each week we have welcomed visitors from all over the world who are passing through Chicago and staying at the hostel or a local hotel. We have been an important place of welcome and love for many people who have come in and out of our community during a difficult or transitional moment in their lives. God has been at work in and through us in powerful ways.
But we have been continuing to ask this question together: What in the world is God up to in this neighborhood and in this congregation...and how can we be most useful to God?
On Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 the people of CTK agreed that, in this particular season of their life together, the time has come for Christ the King Lutheran Church to close ---- so that something new can emerge in this neighborhood and beyond. One of the elders of CTK put it this way: we just have to admit that there are other and better ways for us to make a difference.
A vote was taken to disband as a congregation. Assets will be distributed among those ministries that have been and have become important to the people of CTK, including 50% given to support new mission and ministry in the south loop/loop/Chicago metropolitan area. And a final worship service has been scheduled for October 11, 2009 followed by a catered lunch for all worshippers that day. Both the worship service and lunch will be held at HI-Chicago - the family hostel located on the NW corner of Wabash and Congress Ave. All are welcome.
If you have any questions, please email Kelly at kfryer@arenewalenterprise.com.
Please keep the faithful members of CTK in your prayers.
And pray that God will use the bold witness and actions of this little faith community to bless this neighborhood and the world.
